The Project
In 2022, Walt Disney Imagineering launched “Disney Springs Art Walk, A Canvas of Expression” at Downtown Disney in Orlando, Florida. Artists were invited to create murals that fill the walls with color, emotion, and the spirit of their cultures. While creating this mural I reflected on my own experience with Disneyland growing up. My family wasn’t able to go often and when we did, there were not a lot of families that looked like ours. For this project I simply wanted to create a beautiful Black family experiencing joy while visiting the park, so that when kids that look like me visit the park they see themselves.
Additional Notes
This project is special because of the message and client, and is also a full circle career moment. In 2013, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in art & design by way of an internship with Walt Disney Imagineering. During this mural project I was able to work with some of my old colleagues from that time. The internship was the beginning of a journey I’m still embarking on.
